Probably not, since it was&nbsp;<a href=\"http://deadline.com/2018/01/grammy-ratings-kendrick-lamar-hillary-clinton-bruno-mars-james-corden-cbs-1202272416/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">the lowest watched Grammys</a>&nbsp;in nine years, taking a 24% drop since the last one. A big part of this seems to be due to the&nbsp;<strong>fragmentation of the audience</strong>. With more and more people neglecting traditional TV for streaming services, and with easy access to niche music genres, a broadcast award show that recognizes only the top entries in each field may no longer resonate with today’s segmented audience.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4448\" src=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience.jpeg\" alt=\"Types-of-audience\" width=\"1400\" height=\"926\" srcset=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience.jpeg 1400w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience-300x198.jpeg 300w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience-1024x677.jpeg 1024w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience-768x508.jpeg 768w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103039/Types-of-audience-455x301.jpeg 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" /></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Traditional marketing simply cannot reach as many people as it once did. Even the superbowl of advertising,&nbsp;<a href=\"http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-super-bowl-ratings-20180129-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">the Superbowl, is seeing less reach</a>&nbsp;each year due to people either watching it via other channels or tuning out entirely. Reaching your audience is no longer a shotgun approach. It’s barely even surgical anymore. It’s nearly&nbsp;microsurgery. So how can small and mid-sized businesses with limited marketing budgets get anything going?</p>\n<h2 id=\"465f\" class=\"le lf ir bn lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb gb\">Social media marketing is not a great answer.</h2>\n<p id=\"f174\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph jo jp ir jq b jr mc jt ju jv md jx jy jz me kb kc kd mf kf kg kh mg kj kk kl ik gb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Many small businesses think that marketing via social media is a great answer. Facebook segments the audience for you. You choose the segment you want to appear on. Pay a few bucks, and you’ve got a sure-fire method of targeting who you want. This is a common tactic. In fact,&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"https://www.smartinsights.com/digital-marketing-strategy/2016-smesmb-marketing-trends/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">a study published last year by Smart Insights</a>&nbsp;showed that this method was the second most preferred marketing channel for small businesses:</p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4451 aligncenter\" src=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Social-media-marketing.png\" alt=\"Social-media-marketing\" width=\"539\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Social-media-marketing.png 539w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Social-media-marketing-300x166.png 300w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Social-media-marketing-455x252.png 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" /></p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Yet here’s the problem.&nbsp;<strong class=\"jq is\">People don’t really trust ads on social media anymore</strong>:</p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4453\" src=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads.jpeg\" alt=\"Types-of-Ads\" width=\"1170\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads.jpeg 1170w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads-300x192.jpeg 300w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads-1024x656.jpeg 1024w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads-768x492.jpeg 768w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103038/Types-of-Ads-455x292.jpeg 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" /></p>\n<p id=\"becc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph jo jp ir jq b jr js jt ju jv jw jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl ik gb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The above chart, from&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"http://columbiabusinesstimes.com/2018/01/30/marketing-building-trust-2018/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">MarketingSherpa via CBT</a>&nbsp;shows that&nbsp;<strong class=\"jq is\">ads on social media are one of the least trusted ads</strong>&nbsp;(fifth from the left), only just edging out banner ads! And no one likes banner ads.</p>\n<p id=\"70f6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph jo jp ir jq b jr js jt ju jv jw jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl ik gb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But SMBs may protest and say they’re not really running ads on social media, but using the platform to engage with their followers. Fair, but if businesses are merely engaging with current followers on social platforms,&nbsp;<strong class=\"jq is\">they’re not doing much to gain&nbsp;<em class=\"ld\">new&nbsp;</em>customers</strong>. And in fact,&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"https://www.emarketer.com/content/how-smbs-are-leveraging-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">a recent survey of how SMBs leverage social media by Bank of America (via eMarketer)</a> showed that half of the SMBs didn’t even think this type of communication was all that important.</p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4455 aligncenter\" src=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103037/type-of-communication.png\" alt=\"type-of-communication\" width=\"460\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103037/type-of-communication.png 460w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103037/type-of-communication-300x230.png 300w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103037/type-of-communication-455x348.png 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" /></p>\n<p id=\"5ef2\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph jo jp ir jq b jr js jt ju jv jw jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl ik gb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The reason is that, without paid ads,&nbsp;<strong class=\"jq is\">running an effective social media marketing campaign takes a ton of effort and time</strong>. Creating content on a regular basis is often out of the scope of many busy SMBs, which is why they resort to paid ads in the first place: for quick wins. In fact,&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"https://www.leadpages.net/small-business-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">52% of SMBs use fewer than three digital marketing properties/platforms,&nbsp;<strong class=\"jq is\"><em class=\"ld\">including&nbsp;</em>their website and social media</strong></a>. It’s not because they don’t want to leverage more platforms with their content; it’s because they lack the time to do so.</p>\n<h2 id=\"2a29\" class=\"le lf ir bn lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb gb\">Referral marketing is a better way to target audience slices.</h2>\n<p id=\"6b20\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph jo jp ir jq b jr mc jt ju jv md jx jy jz me kb kc kd mf kf kg kh mg kj kk kl ik gb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Businesses tend to try to leverage social media because that’s where they think their audience, especially the younger audience, lives. While that may be true, SMBs still need to overcome the factors above: 1) distrust of ads on social media, 2) the time and effort of using social media without ads, and one we shouldn’t forget: 3) the whims of the platform.&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/12/technology/facebook-news-feed-changes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Facebook will be changing their feed in 2018</a>.&nbsp;<a class=\"au km\" href=\"http://fortune.com/2017/12/08/youtube-advertising-crackdown-drawbacks/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">YouTube is cracking down on advertising in 2018</a>. These platforms say jump, and you…</p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4458\" src=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing.jpeg\" alt=\"Referral marketing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing.jpeg 1200w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://cdn.refersion.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/26103036/Referral-marketing-455x303.jpeg 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" /></p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"1c54\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Instead of going whole hog on social media,&nbsp;<strong>a sound referral program is a more lucrative marketing channel.</strong> Focusing on referrals tackles the issues above:</p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"b253\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"https://www.refersion.com/blog/build-trust-in-your-brand-quickly-with-referral-marketing/\n\" rel=\"noopener\">Referrals from friends, family, and even influencers are trusted</a>, more than any other advertising source.</li>\n<li id=\"1c34\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A good referral program provides SMBs with an&nbsp; external sales/marketing force, where content and conversions are created for you, by your customer base, saving time.</li>\n<li id=\"7e63\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You run the program in-house, and aren’t subject to the whims of social platforms.</li>\n</ol>\n<p id=\"d775\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">SMBs should focus efforts on referral and affiliate marketing due to&nbsp;<a href=\"http://info.conversantmedia.eu/blog/infographic-affiliate-marketing-roi-customers-referred-via-affiliate-marketing-spend-58-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">high return-on-investment rates</a>&nbsp;and because it’s a cost-per-sale model, meaning you only pay when you make a sale.</p>\n<p id=\"5ea1\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So referral marketing is less up-front cost, less effort, and usually see a higher return; a perfect channel for SMBs to concentrate their marketing efforts on. Yet referral marketing doesn’t crack the top three channels SMBs use (as seen above)! Keep in mind&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckcohn/2015/11/23/how-to-make-customers-the-best-advocates-for-your-company/#2b9bffb8d9e8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">this stat from the Wharton School of Business (via Forbes)</a>:</p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"f6c2\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">83% of satisfied customers say they are willing to refer products or services. Only 29% ultimately do.</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p id=\"0e67\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Meaning,&nbsp;<strong>your customers are ready and willing to refer. All they need is a little push (ie. incentive) to do so.&nbsp;</strong>That’s&nbsp;precisely&nbsp;what businesses need to focus their efforts on accomplishing. If you don’t, you’re leaving money on the table.</p>\n</div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"45eb\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">All the time and money in the world, businesses would focus on every marketing channel.
